The  Vegetables & Herbs group is active in both research and consultancy, with the group’s researchers working on both national and international research projects in a diverse network of partners and institutions. Their aim is to improve efficiency, quality and sustainability in vegetable production based on organic principles. To this end, they are in very close contact with diverse stakeholders in the field in order to identify challenges, generate knowledge and work towards practical and practicable solutions.

The group’s priorities include:

  • Cultivation techniques
  • Weed management
  • Variety comparisons and breeding
  • Compost quality
  • Soil health and nutrient management
  • Trials of new crop protectants and strategies to foster beneficials in organic vegetable and herb production

In field trials, researchers investigate the following questions, among others:

  • Which non-chemical weed control methods are best suited for perennial herb cultivation?
  • Can innovative cultivation techniques and new crop protectants help to ensure cropping reliability of Swiss organic broccoli in the future?
  • Which alternative substrates can be used to sustainably and efficiently reduce or replace the peat content in cultivation substrates for vegetable transplants?
  • Which vegetable varieties are suitable for vegetable production that is maximally diverse, sustainable and resilient?
