Agroforestry (AF) systems are currently experiencing a renaissance. They offer an agroecological strategy for adapting to climate change and at the same time promote the protection and regeneration of natural resources such as soil, water and biodiversity. In addition, Agroforestry can sustainably increase productivity per area and enable farms to expand their product range.
In order to offer visitors, students and employees of FiBL a place of learning for practice and science, we would like to create a representative, attractive, visible and easily accessible location close to the FiBL campus with the involvement of interested FiBL employees. The plot will serve as a platform for monitoring and researching the effects of agroforestry systems (synergies between woody plants and arable crops, soil fertility, microclimate, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, landscape quality) as part of other projects. FiBL employees and local residents have the opportunity to obtain information and, to a certain extent, to harvest food from the fruit trees and shrubs themselves. The results can be disseminated to farmers and other stakeholders via various established FiBL channels (excursions, courses, fact sheets, videos, podcasts). Ideally, the demo area should be integrated into networks of practitioners and other projects in Central Europe.
