The cultivation of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill (Lavande Fine)) and lavender hybrids (Lavandula angustifolia X Lavandula latifoliaI) is a traditional agricultural activity in the southeast of France.
In recent decades, these emblematic crops are subjected to a significant decline. The cause of this decline is mainly due to phytoplasms which are transmitted to the plant via an insect vector, the leafhopper Hyalesthes obsoletus. In France and elsewhere, research has focused on (i) the selection of new varieties, (ii) the production of healthy plants, (iii) the identification of different phytoplasma strains and, more recently, (iv) several vector control approaches.
