benefit 23+: Assessment of regional sustainability effects along food value chains in Austria

Original titleMehrwert für die Region 23+: Bewertung regionaler Nachhaltigkeitseffekte entlang von Lebensmittel-Wertschöpfungsketten in Österreich
Abstract

Food from regional production is often associated with production conditions that are fair, safe and future-proof - i.e. sustainable and resilient - for humans, animals and the environment. Against this background, FiBL Austria designed the "Regional benefit" assessment model for the "Zurück zum Ursprung" (ZZU) brand back in 2014 and has continued to develop it over the years on the basis of new scientific findings and developments in practice. The current Regio23+ model comprises 41 indicators in the dimensions "regional economy", "social and governance in the region" and "regional natural resources" and aims to quantify the "regional benefit" generated by regionally labelled products. For this purpose, the entire value chain through which a product to be evaluated passes is analysed and assessed. The calculated "regional benefit" that a ZZU product achieves in comparison to a conventional reference product is shown on the ZZU homepage and on the products. The current project focuses on updating the primary agricultural data needed to calculate the "regional benefit".
