The aim of the project is to investigate the problem of a completely organic feeding of pigs in regard to pig rearing, nutrient efficiency, carcass and product quality, and to find proper solutions for feeding and product processing. For this reason, a feeding trial in piglets with 100 % organic feed is carried out on farm. At Agroscope in Posieux, three different feeding strategies (with 100 % organic feed) are tested in a fattening trial and compared with the current standard (95 % organic feed). All parameters of fattening performance and carcass quality are examined, especially the fat quality. The pigs will be slaughtered and cut in Posieux, and further processed at ABZ Spiez, a training centre for Swiss meat industry. All relevant physical and chemical parameters of the product quality and durability are examined there. Two types of production are evaluated by the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences (HAFL) in a sensory panel and a consumer test. That way, the suitability of the testing feed can be evaluated with keeping in mind the animal performance, carcass quality and processing as well as the customers’ acceptance. The most suitable feedstuff will then be examined by SUISAG (corporation for services in pig production) in Sempach for "genotype X feed" interactions.
