Legumes on domestic fields enhance biodiversity, they help to improve soil fertility and can be grown resource efficiently and they can be used as a valuable feed. This project aims at implementing nature compatible concepts in the German farming practice. The existing scientific knowledge will be accumulated and documented. Moreover, experiences of ca. 30 "best practice farms" will be collected and edited in a handbook for practitioners. This is meant to raise interest in farmers to try or enhance legume growing on their farms. The project intents to show that for (nearly) every farm a legume crop can be found that can be integrated into the farming and marketing concept and that is beneficial to biodiversity at the same time.
Besides the farmers’ handbook and the research review that will be published in mid 2014 there will be demonstration field days on two farms: on the Hessische Staatsdomände Frankenhause in northern Hessen on June 26th, 2013 and on Hof Gasswies in Klettgau, Baden-Württemberg on July 30th, 2013.
