More than 60% of the agricultural land in the Upper Rhine region is used for arable farming, especially for the cultivation of corn and wheat. Climate changes have been increasing for several decades, which is reflected in an increase in extreme weather events that are particularly unfavourable for agriculture. Among other things, farmers are faced with water shortages and heat waves that severely affect crop yields. This leads to insecure income situations in agriculture and to rising food prices for the entire population.
The aim of the project is to work with consultants, researchers and practitioners to modify farming systems in a regionally adapted way so that they can continue to deliver stable yields in the future and, where possible, make a contribution to climate protection. For this reason, model farms are being developed to serve as models for adapting to and mitigating climate change. Innovative farming systems are being tested in field trials. Furthermore, farmers will be accompanied on their farms in the implementation of practices aimed at climate change mitigation and adaptation, and new sales channels will be identified in the Upper Rhine region.
