The potential of sustainability innovations within the Austria food system

Abstract

The current food system is mainly not sustainable and plays a significant role in current global challenges and crises such as climate change, soil degradation, biodiversity loss, monotonous agricultural landscapes, poor animal welfare, food waste and problematic working conditions in the food production sector. A transformation of the way we produce and consume food is urgently needed.

It is encouraging to see pioneers such as farmers and companies that are taking innovative paths toward sustainable development, thereby demonstrating that a socio-ecological food system and economic success can be combined.
The study gives an overview of the current food system in Austria, shows the potential of sustainability innovations and derives recommendations for the design of framework conditions and support measures towards sustainable food systems.
