Food systems emissions - from production to consumption - contribute a relevant share to global greenhouse gas emissions. Although Swiss cities are increasingly preoccupied with reducing their ecological footprint, they have not yet identified ‘food’ as a major action field for achieving this goal. The overall objective of our study is to place urban agriculture in the context of the food system in a city and develop suggestions on how to increase the overall sustainability of the urban food system.
In particular, the project aims at mapping the actors involved in the city region's food system and their different attitudes and perceptions of food, identifying under which conditions urban agriculture can deliver their potential benefits in the city region, assessing the level of sustainability of the food system, and developing instruments and measures for key stakeholder groups to improve the sustainability performance.
To reach these goals, we will follow a case study approach focusing on the city of Basel. We will apply qualitative and quantitative methods, combining knowledge from literature and experts in the field. The two-year project will be carried out in close collaboration with the COST Action UAE, contributing to three of its working groups.
