Lupin breeding and innovation for improved suitability for cultivation in Switzerland

Abstract

The white lupin is an important, locally adapted source of protein for humans and animals. In the "LUPINNO SUISSE" project of the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) breeding material with improved anthracnose resistance, early ripening and low alkaloid content was developed.
In the "LuZIA" project, candidate varieties are to be brought to market maturity. Furthermore, we are improving breeding programmes by using new technical innovations, making them more efficient.

The project consists of four parts:

  1. Establishment of optical seed sorting (colour sorter) on a laboratory scale for greater precision in field trials, optimised seed quality and automated mass selection in breeding. Use of colour sorting for the development of variety testing and seed propagation for variety development.
  2. Development of an efficient breeding scheme by implementing "single seed descent (SSD)" or bulk methods using high-throughput selection methods.
  3. Establishment of genomic selection.
  4. Events and contributions in various media to communicate the new findings to a specialist audience and the general public.

LuZIA is investing in the long-term existence of a competitive lupin breeding programme in Switzerland. The project ensures breeding progress in white lupins through constant innovation and contributes to a sustainable, local supply of protein in Switzerland.
