The Alpine region is particularly threatened by climate change. For farmers, this change has become a reality and crop losses have multiplied in recent years. To meet the challenges ahead, we need to implement a series of small, easy-to-apply solutions. For example, intercropping has long been studied as a way of stabilising yields. It contributes to crop resilience by promoting diversity. The variety garden at Erschmatt preserves 15 different varieties of Valais faba bean, which was once an important source of protein for the population of the Alps. At the same time, the garden preserves a large number of Valais spring wheat varieties.
This project explores the potential of local varieties of faba bean in combined crops with spring wheat. The aim is to provide locally produced, high-quality and more sustainable sources of protein and starch for the Alpine region. FiBL is providing scientific support for the project.
