Vitiforestry – a sustainable strategy for viticulture to cope with climate change?

Abstract

Increasing weather extremes, changing rainfall distributions and strong annual fluctuations pose new challenges for today's viticulture. These evolving climatic conditions have a sensitive impact on the vine. Looking ahead, incorporating trees in vineyards offers an opportunity to enhance the resilience of these systems and to mitigate the effect of extreme weather events. The interest among winegrowers in this approach is growing, along with the demand for relevant information and guidance.

The aim of this project is to supplement the limited existing knowledge on modern viticulture systems in Switzerland and worldwide. Therefore, an established system will be studied in detail to understand its impact on microclimate, water and nutrient supply, as well as its influence on mycorrhizal fungi. Additionally, new systems will also be monitored from the outset to gather initial data and support their development. Experience exchange groups and workshops will provide a platform for interested winegrowers to connect and share knowledge.
