Demand and interest for organic production and consumption in Kenya is steadily growing. The first PMCA project helped the Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN) and partner organisations establish a participatory approach (PMCA) that increased trust and market access for different actors – focusing on Murang'a county.
This project builds on these successes and aims to further boost organic sector development in Kenya by using PMCA in more counties while strengthening KOAN in offering high-value services for its members and clients, for other sector stakeholders and the public. The efforts of the second phase of the PMCA project will be closely coordinated with the Bachmann-funded projects on Digital Trainings and the Social Media Influencer Marketing project.
The project is built on a participatory process where, together with KOAN and its members, two key sector services and needs of actors along the value chain are identified. Overall there are two key components:
Implementation strategy and sustainability
FiBL will build on the first PMCA project and keep and deepen its strategic relationship with the project’s main partner – the Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN). By explicitly aiming to strengthen KOAN and its business model, this project will build the basis for the sustainable growth of KOAN and the organic sector in Kenya. If successful, this would create a beacon of a national sector organisation from whom the remainder of East African organic movements could learn. A large part of the project is dedicated to strengthening KOAN’s capacity – both as an organisation and in terms of the services it provides. This starts from the beginning of the project with an assessment of the existing services over strengthening Kilimohai (the East African Organic label) and supporting KOAN in improving its management tools and the capacities of its employees.
