Market gardening - innovation to strengthen the Austrian supply of fresh vegetables

Original titleMarktgärtnerei – Innovation zur Stärkung der österreichischen Frischgemüseversorgung
Abstract

Market gardening is a bio-intensive form of vegetable cultivation that aims to achieve multiple harvests per growing season on the same area while maintaining or increasing resource efficiency and soil fertility. It places high demands on vegetable cultivation skills, culture management, fertilization and soil management as well as business and work organization. So far there have only been a few scientific studies or data on market gardening, the project wants to make a basic contribution to this: Key figures on productivity and yields as well as crop rotation plans are developed (work package WP Vegetable cultivation), business key figures are calculated and labor economics exercises are carried out on site (WP Business Administration), soil samples are taken and measures for optimizing nutrient management are derived from their analysis (WP Soil Management) and the knowledge gained is disseminated (WP Dissemination). The FiBL AT team works on the WP Business administration.
