Animal welfare competence centre sheep

Abstract

The abandonment of the non-curative intervention of tail docking in sheep requires optimized herd management and the selection of short-tailed phenotypes. As part of the project, an overall breeding value “animal welfare” and a new herd management tool are to be developed. For this purpose, surveys are carried out on farms and a database with relevant information on animal welfare, when keeping undocked sheep, will be established. A nationwide network of farms is to provide new knowledge and take on a multiplier role. In the project, FiBL Deutschland e.V. is responsible for putting existing and newly acquired knowledge into practice.
