Since 2019, members of Bio Suisse, the umbrella organisation of Swiss organic farmers, have only been allowed to use vegetable varieties that have been bred without cell fusion technology. However, the rule does not apply to cauliflower, broccoli, white cabbage, savoy cabbage and chicory, where cell fusion varieties are still permitted for Bio Suisse producers.
To give producers an overview of the cell fusion-free vegetable varieties, FiBL, in co-operation with the organic farming associations Bioland (Germany), Naturland (Germany), Demeter (Germany), BNN (Germany), Bio Austria (Germany), Coopérative Biobreizh (France), Bio Cohérence (France) and FNAB (France), is publishing a list of vegetable varieties that have been bred without cell fusion technology. The list contains the currently available cell fusion-free varieties of cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, etc.), chicory varieties (chicory, sugar loaf, cicorino rosso, etc.) and root parsley. The positive list serves as an aid for producers when selecting cell fusion-free varieties in the corresponding vegetable crops.
The current positive list can be downloaded free of charge in five languages from the FiBL Shop.
