Impacts of bio-dynamic preparations, reduced tillage and fertilization on yield and soil fertility (Frick trial)

Abstract

In this project, we observe the effect of reduced tillage (shallow loosening or turning, 5-10 cm deep) compared to conventional ploughing (15-18 cm deep) in an arable crop rotation since autumn 2002. We also examine whether other factors could promote the adaptation of reduced tillage in organic farming: Slurry versus compost/slurry and biodynamic preparations versus no preparations. This trial is embedded in the FiBL farm and is being carried out in close collaboration with an advisory group of practicing farmers and advisors. Yields, weed development and effects on soil fertility are monitored over the long term. Specific questions are pursued in other projects that use the long-term trial as a platform.
