Kaffeemacher GmbH is characterized by fairly purchased and sustainable speciality coffee. It has its own farm in Nicaragua with 4.2 hectares of coffee cultivation and coffee processing, fermentation and drying. 10% of the coffee roasted in Basel comes from Nicaragua. Coffee cultivation is threatened by climatic changes. The development of a resilient cultivation system, particularly with a focus on soil fertility, is key to securing the future of coffee cultivation and the availability of its own raw materials. Today, the de-pulped coffee pulp is spread on the farm. The high sugar content of the coffee pulp has a toxic effect on the soil biome and its nutrient-rich potential is not utilized.
As part of the BioFabrica project, a specific compost recipe from the coffee pulp is to be developed. Coffee pulp with locally available organic material is to be defined. The compost is based on the efficiency of the synthetic fertilizer and is intended to replace it. The compost is significantly cheaper than synthetic fertilizer, is always available and increases the microbiological activity in the soil. This means that local nutrient cycles can be closed and Kaffeemacher GmbH offers circularly produced coffee. Production costs are reduced by more than 30%, as artificial fertilizer becomes more expensive. The projects therefore increases the added value of the local ecosystem, reduces procurement costs and strengthens its innovative and sustainable positioning in the Swiss coffee market.
