Methane emissions of ruminant livestock contribute to the Swiss greenhouse gas budget. Other than intensive cattle systems, grassland-based approaches have not been systematically investigated, yet. Ruminal methanogenesis, however, may depend on the botanical composition and development stage of the meadows, which determine feed intake and fermentation patterns via plant secondary compounds. The aim of this project is to investigate in vitro the methanogenic potential of pasture swards differing in botanical composition and developmental stage.
