In spring 2021, the Sri Lankan president announced a ban on the import of synthetic fertilisers and agrochemicals to achieve a 100 % conversion to organic agricultural production from next season on. This presents a huge challenge for the country's agricultural production, which until now was mainly conventional. A crucial issue is that of fertilisation. Currently, one million cubic meters of conventional fertilisers are imported annually into Sri Lanka.
Finding a solution to replace these mineral fertilisers in the short term is not easy. The aim of this project is to support and scientifically advise local actors in the development of alternatives allowing an agricultural production that is both ecologically and economically sustainable.
