Pigs going veggie – Feeding vegetable waste to pigs

Original titleGemüseschwein – Verfütterung von Rüstabfällen an Schweine
Abstract

Feeding pigs and chickens is largely based on cereals and pulses, crops which could also be used for human nutrition. In order to reduce feed-food competition and to close regional cycles, organic farming must access new ways of feeding monogastric animals. An important way to achieve this is the use of by-products from food production. A great potential, which is currently not being used due to logistical challenges or the lack of a network.

In this project, vegetable waste is fed to pigs on a commercial organic farm. The effects on per-formance, animal health and carcass quality will be investigated. In addition, the practical and economic feasibility will be examined.
