Local food systems as key to comprehensive integrative governance of sustainability (KERNiG)

Original titleKommunale Ernährungssysteme als Schlüssel zu einer umfassend-integrativen Nachhaltigkeits-Governance
Abstract

Food systems are currently hardly embedded in the municipal sustainability governance. Food production and provisioning is highly structured horizontally (between food products) and vertically (along the supply chain); and municipalities do not seem to be in control of the food market. Against this background we address the following research questions:

  • How can smaller cities include food systems in their local agendas as cross-cutting theme and thereby initiate and perpetuate comprehensive processes of local sustainable transformations?
  • How does the deliberate planning of local food systems interact with existing sustainability strategies in the fields of energy and mobility?
  • Which processes of integration in policy, market, society, and knowledge networks are necessary to achieve a successful governance of sustainability through municipal food systems planning?
