Another strong presence of the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) at BIOFACH in Nuremberg: During the 2015 staging of the world’s leading trade fair for organic food, FiBL will present a cross-section of its work in Hall 1 from February 11 to 14. One of the highlights will be the presentation of the latest organic statistics, with proof of further growth of the global organic sector. FiBL researchers will input strongly at the BIOFACH Congress where Organic 3.0 is one of the main topics.

(Frick, February 10, 2015) The FiBL Stand in Hall 1 (Stand Nr. 549) at BIOFACH will again be an important meeting point during BIOFACH 2015. We will inform you about our work, richly documented with our well established and new publications. These include our new activity report covering the last two years (german only) and interesting technical leaflets on welfare-conscious animal husbandry and sustainable food processing. Another important publication fresh from the press is an important report of the ICOPP project, which contains a major collection of statistics and estimations on the use of protein feeds in eight European countries.

Further growth of worldwide organic production

FiBL will again have a prominent presence at the BIOFACH Congress (see programme on our website). One of the major highlights is the presentation of “The World of Organic Agriculture“, the annual yearbook with statistics from a large part of the globe that we publish together with IFOAM – Organics International. This year, the number of countries covered has grown to 170, which is 6 up from last year. The 16th edition of the yearbook confirms the further growth of the sector. The number of organic producers has risen to 2 million (plus 5 percent) while the surface under organic production has increased to 43 million hectares. Key markets showed continuous growth of retail sales. Worldwide market value is estimated at 72 billion US Dollars. Please find further information in the separate media release in this documentation or on our website.

Sustainability assessment, Science Day and the Ukraine

Further important programme points with FiBL’s participation are the development of a strategic vision for the sector – Organic 3.0 – and more than a dozen sessions with FiBL speakers and panellists. One of our key topics is SMART, our sustainability assessment tool for companies and farms, which is now commercialized by the FiBL spin-off Sustainable Food Systems (SFS GmbH). CEO Moritz Teriete will take part in two panels. SMART was introduced in 2013 and has been received very well by the market.

FiBL’s main contribution to the Congress is the 3rd Science Day on Friday, February 13 in Room Oslo, where international experts will discuss organic research agendas and strategies for Europe and worldwide. You can find the details of the programme on our website, see link below.

We also recommend that you visit Ukraine’s country pavilion in Hall 5, where our Ukrainian partners exhibit their products. The first presence last year was a success, and despite the political and economic difficulties in the country the SECO-founded project “Organic Market Development in Ukraine 2012 – 2016” is further pursued with vigour. Especially organic exports continued to grow considerably during 2014.
