The BioDiVerger project was born out of a desire to find alternatives to monoculture orchards, which have little biodiversity and are highly dependent on external inputs. The need for profitability is also central, as is the gradual reduction of working hours. To achieve this, two types of orchard have been created: one as an agroforestry with vegetable production, and the other as an orchard grocery inspired by permaculture.
This originally three-part project has been followed up and analysed since 2013 to assess the sustainability and economic viability of the systems. A continuation of the project seems essential in order to draw real and comprehensible conclusions about the longevity of these types of orchards, whose life expectancy is estimated at 18 years.
