Assessing and fostering the adaptive capacity to climate change of local agricultural communities in mountainous areas

Abstract

The COMMUNITYadapt project aims to develop a composite index (Communities' Adaptive Capacity Index - CACI) to measure and compare the adaptive capacity (AC) of local agricultural communities in mountain areas. The goal is to systematically compare the AC levels of different production certification schemes, which may reveal different development paths for local agricultural supply chains. The framework will provide relevant adaptive capacity indicators and corresponding empirical data. This dataset with both qualitative and quantitative empirical data from the case studies will be the outcome of this project. This should enable stakeholders to implement specific climate change adaptation programmes in mountain regions and policy makers, NGOs and consumers to make more informed decisions. Identifying the impact of certification on community responses to climate change will enhance understanding of the effectiveness of certification.
