Sustainable management of internal parasites in cattle in the canton Vaud and research on anthelmintic resistance

Original titleGestion durable des parasites internes chez les bovins dans le canton de Vaud, recherche sur la résistance aux anthelmintiques
Abstract

The results of applied research conducted in 2020 and 2021 in the canton of Vaud, clearly demonstrate resistance of bovine gastrointestinal strongyles (species of worms) against different anthelmintic molecules, it is therefore imperative to act. Currently, the application of dewormers is still too often unjustified, and given in a preventive way. In order to preserve these molecules, which are essential for animals whose grazing management cannot necessarily be modified, it is necessary to involve all actors who play a role in the use of anthelmintics. A particularly important role is played by veterinarians who sell the molecules and advise their clients. In order to have a real impact on current practices, which are based on knowledge from a time when resistance was only marginally addressed, the involvement of treating veterinarians in the development of a more sustainable system is necessary.
