Feeding in standard pig farming is not species-appropriate with regard to the composition and consistency of the feed as well as with regard to feed presentation. The pigs cannot optimally show their species-specific behaviour in connection with feed, which can lead to abnormal behaviour and frustration. For example, they can hardly forage or root for feed, and only spend a short time of the day with feed intake.
The project "WelFeed" consists of two parts. In the first part, a review article is written. The article addresses the question of what constitutes species-appropriate feeding and where unused synergies lie between animal nutrition and animal welfare research. In the second part, an experiment is conducted to better understand foraging and feed intake behaviour.
