A transition towards circularity in the food system could be the solution to address the various sustainability challenges related to our food systems. In such a circular food system, plant biomass is used primarily to produce human food. Byproducts from food production, processing and consumption are reused or recycled into the food system as feed or fertilizers. While these principles of circularity make sense scientifically and resonate in society, there is little understanding of the actual requirements for and implications of closing the loop of materials and substances and of how to best initiate and support such a transition to circularity in food systems.
This project is associated to a larger project on this topic at the University of Wageningen. The overall aim of this larger project is to compose pathways towards circular food systems that can feed the world while respecting the planetary boundaries. At FiBL, we contribute to identify and model strategies needed for the transition towards circular food systems for multiple case study countries that represent a diversity of socio-economic contexts.
