To reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, Switzerland will notably depend on carbon dioxide sequestration. In his postulate, NR Jacques Bourgeois, requested an analysis of soil carbon sequestration for Switzerland.
This project addresses two questions of the postulate. The project summarizes the current knowledge regarding soil carbon sequestration, presents how much carbon is currently stored in Swiss soils, identifies the potential of Swiss soils to store additional carbon, and analyses what is necessary to improve our understanding of the actual sequestration potentials.
The project also discusses specific measures to increase the carbon content of soils. Since there are great differences between different land-use types/soil categories, the measures are addressed separately for organic and mineral soils and distinguish natural unmanaged, agricultural, forest and settlement soils.
