In the Swiss region Gäu-Olten, nitrate concentrations in groundwater used to produce drinking water is typically above 25 mg/l. In the regional nitrate project, participating farmers since 2000 commit to management measures considered to minimize nitrate losses. The nitrate leaching potential is judged based on a point system named nitrate index. The actual effect of the implemented measures and validity of the nitrate index have not been verified.
The main aims of the project NitroGäu are to 1. scientifically evaluate the effectiveness of the nitrate index, including evaluation of nitrate monitoring methods and 2. develop further adjustment in management in order to improve nitrogen use efficiency and reduce nitrate leaching losses, including representation in a revised nitrate index. The research takes place both in arable and in vegetable production.
