Status quo: Dental health in Swiss dairy cows

Original titleStatus quo: Zahngesundheit bei Schweizer Milchkühen
Abstract

A functional set of teeth is (especially in ruminants) fundamental for health and longevity.
In literature, there are very limited studies on abnormalities in cows’ teeth. In terms of sensor-based data (Rumiwatch) on rumination frequency and total eating time, there are considerable differences between individuals within a single dairy herd.

For correct data interpretation in studies on dairy feed conversion and ruminating, the status of dental health should be included. Decreased ruminating time as well as diminished eating time resulting from teeth problems could lead to general health and fertility problems.

In this project, 200 skulls of slaughtered Swiss dairy cows are examined for abnormalities and abrasion.
This study should provide insight into the current state of dental health in Swiss dairy cows.
