Qualitative and quantitative promotion of Swiss organic pear cultivation

Original titleQualitative- und quantitative Förderung des Schweizer Biobirnenanbaus
Abstract

Yields of organic pear production alternate greatly from year to year and are far from meeting the market demand. Problems in cultivation are also causing some farms to reduce the area of pear production or, in some cases, to abandon it completely. An analysis of the current situation was carried out in 2023 to identify the weak points in organic pear cultivation. Based on the findings of this analysis, the organic pear project for the years 2024–2027 was designed to increase yield security and profitability and thus to increase the cultivation area. The activities are broadly based - among other things, ring trials are being carried out on practical farms and a network of producers is being created for the purpose of data collection and knowledge exchange. This database is also used to evaluate profitability and for economic calculations. The organic suitability of certain pear varieties can be tested through variety testing and evaluation in experimental and practical orchards. Furthermore, plant protection and storage trials are carried out with a focus on pear scab. Knowledge transfer is ensured through the exchange of experience, conferences and the preparation of bulletins.
