The global demand for organic personal care products was worth over $7.6 billion in 2012 and is expected to almost double by 2018, with a yearly growth rate of almost 10 percent. In order to capitalize on this growing consumer demand for development – promoting both income generation and biodiversity conservation in Southern Africa – since 2012, SECO has been supporting PhytoTrade in its effort to stimulate the market development for final consumer products in the area of herbal supplements, natural skin care products, natural cosmetics, and perfumes using locally-sourced natural ingredients. The aim of this project was to evaluate PhytoTrade as the implementing project partner, involving as a biotrade sector association more than 60 members within nine countries in Southern Africa. In 2014, PhytoTrade and its members prioritized the following natural ingredients: baobab, marula, mongongo, mafura, ximenia, kigelia, kalahari melon, and devil’s claw.
