Herb power for animal health: from tradition to legislation – 2025

This introductory course provides a comprehensive overview of the use of medicinal plants in animals, with a focus on their applications in animal health.

Divided into five modules, the course explores the diverse uses of herbal veterinary medicinal products (HVMPs) in animal health along with the associated legal issues, risk assessment, quality, safety and sustainability considerations involved.

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to identify the main species of medicinal plants used in veterinary medicine, understand their pharmacological and chemical properties, and explore their potential applications. They will gain basic knowledge of the legal framework for the use and registration of HVMPs in the EU, as well as sustainable sourcing, environmental impacts and conservation approaches to ensure the ethical and responsible use of medicinal plants. Additionally, participants will be able to assess the quality of herbal products and evaluate safety profiles, adverse effects, and risk management strategies for HVMPs in animal health.
