In this project, an internet-based information system for Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS; including organic) production, domestic market and external trade data will be established, and a unique database with transparent and reliable data on the size of the VSS sector, not only in the area of production but increasingly in the area of domestic markets, export and import will be built.
The results provided through these data collection activities will be widely disseminated, aiming to show that sustainable agriculture can be a business opportunity, in particular for developing countries. The data will be used by a wide range of groups including policy makers, traders, researchers, journalists, NGOs and international organisations, among others.
FiBL will, in close cooperation with the Internationl Trade Centre (ITC), coordinate data collection & processing on VSS in order to provide a sound basis for decision-making for successful development policies and businesses. A key tool to achieve this goal will be a set of VSS data to be added to the ITC database on the Standards Map website.
