Recycling palm oil production residues by composting

Original titleValorisation des résidus de la production d'huile de palme par compostage
Abstract

Achieving a sustainable palm oil production is an important challenge for both palm oil producing and using countries. A well-considered and ecologically compatible recycling of organic residues produced at oil mills is essential to achieve the desired sustainability from an ecological and economic point of view. Composting these residues presents an ideal solution.

In the current project, two pilot facilities will be set up and local partners will be trained and prepared to manage them and ensure the possible commercialisation to producers. These pilot facilities are meant to be the starting point for expanding compost production and serve as a model for other oil mills. To ensure sustainability, FiBL is building the necessary capabilities and developing a business plan with the mill and local advisers to ensure profitability for the production and the use of different compost products by the smallholder cooperatives.
